The Role of the Parent Co-Chair of the Newton North School Council
The parent co-chair of the School Council should first acquaint him/herself with all aspects of the School Council as detailed on the School Council website (http://nnhsschoolcouncil.weebly.com), paying specific attention to the bylaws. The following is a list of the prime responsibilities of the parent co-chair and should be read in conjunction with the information identified on the Newton North School Council website.
The parent co-chair (PCC) of the NNHS School Council (SC) has the prime responsibility for the following:
1. Answering questions asked of the SC
The PCC is responsible for handling and responding to any questions presented to the SC via the SC website and from any other venue. The PCC shall make sure his/hers is the email address to whom questions are sent from the SC website.
2. Maintaining and updating of all the information on the SC website
This includes but is not limited to the updated calendar of SC meetings, the timely postings of the agendas and minutes to satisfy MA open meeting laws, SC membership, SC deliverables, and bylaws.
3. Ensuring that SC meetings runs as efficiently as possible
The PCC chairs every meeting to maximize its effectiveness and efficiency. Here are some specifics.
• Come prepared with a sign-in sheet in the event of any public speakers, and administer protocol for any such speakers addressing the SC meeting
• Ensure that each meeting starts and ends on time without delay for members’ tardy attendance
• Ensure that members attend all meetings and are on time
• Ensure that every meeting is run according to Massachusetts Open Law meetings (as identified on SC website)
• Keep the meeting on track according to the agenda
• Assign actions to SC members
• Follow up to ensure that SC members complete assigned action points
4. Providing effective co-ordination with NNHS Principal
The PCC establishes regular contact with the NNHS principal to ensure that any business the principal deems relevant to the SC is reflected in the meetings agenda. In the past the PCC has established brief 30-minute sessions with the principal a week before each SC meeting to establish the next meeting agenda and go over any outstanding relevant issues. The PCC shall be responsible for providing the minutes of each meeting in a timely fashion to the principal, and once the principal has approved them, making the minutes available to the SC for consideration and voting at the next SC meeting.
5. Posting all SC information online
In accordance with Massachusetts Open Meeting law, the PCC will ensure all relevant information is posted online both via the SC website and on the NNHS PTSO website via the currently serving PTSO co-presidents.
